Mr Shahid Khan | Consultant Urological Surgeon | Surrey | United Kingdom

Mr Shahid Khan
FRCS (Urol) FEBU

Mr Shahid Khan FRCS (Urol), FEBU is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in urinary stone disease, advanced endourology, and upper-tract oncological surgery. He practises at East Surrey Hospital (NHS) and holds private practice positions at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, Horley, and Spire St Anthony's Hospital, Sutton.

He qualified from King Edward Medical University (Mayo Hospital, Lahore) in 1996 and undertook specialist urology training within the London/Kent Sussex & Surrey (KSS) Deanery, with placements at internationally recognised stone units: Guy's Hospital (London), St George's Hospital (Tooting), and the Western General Hospital (Edinburgh). He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Urol) in 2009 and Fellowship of the European Board of Urology (FEBU) in 2010.

Mr Khan is currently the Clinical Lead for Urological Cancers and Renal Stones at Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH). In this capacity he oversees the urological cancer MDT, renal stone service, and quality governance for a department of eight consultant urologists.

He established the lithotripsy (ESWL) service at Surrey & Sussex NHS Trust, enabling patients across Surrey and West Sussex to access shockwave treatment locally for the first time. The service also offers emergency lithotripsy to patients admitted acutely to SASH with obstructing urinary stones.

His surgical expertise in stone disease encompasses mini & ultra-mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), flexible ureterorenoscopy with holmium laser stone fragmentation (FURS), and a comprehensive metabolic stone evaluation programme to identify underlying causes and prevent recurrence. He also specialises in the endoscopic management of complex and malignant ureteric strictures using metallic ureteric stents like Memokath and Resonance stents which provide durabilty and less frequent exchanges.

Mr Khan developed the Template Prostate Biopsy Service at SASH in 2012. The service now performs over 300 transperineal and precision-point biopsies annually, incorporating MRI fusion-targeted biopsy at Spire St Anthony's Hospital. He provides comprehensive prostate cancer care including PSA monitoring, MRI interpretation, active surveillance protocols, and management of localised disease.

For kidney and ureteric tumours, Mr Khan employs minimally invasive techniques — laparoscopic radical nephrectomy, laparoscopic nephroureterectomy, and robotic-assisted surgery. He leads the CMR Surgical robotic renal programme at East Surrey Hospital, which is developing as a regional training reference unit for the CMR platform. He manages the complete range of general urological conditions including BPH (TURP, GreenLight laser), lower urinary tract symptoms, haematuria, urinary tract infections, testicular pathology, male contraception, and paediatric urological assessment.

Research Publications

Mr Khan's research interests span endoscopic stone surgery, robotic and minimally invasive renal surgery, prostate cancer diagnostics, urological oncology, and simulation-based surgical education. He is a named investigator in the IDENTIFY study — a multicentre haematuria investigation study published in BJU International (2021) — and in the MIND-P study, a prospective cohort evaluating mental wellbeing and quality of life in prostate cancer, with results published in PLoS ONE (2023) and European Urology (2024). His 2025 comparative outcomes data on robot-assisted versus laparoscopic radical nephrectomy at a UK district general hospital are published in European Urology Open Science and The Oncologist. Further contributions include a randomised controlled trial of simulation-based ureteroscopy training in Surgical Endoscopy (2015), a systematic review of robotic cystectomy outcomes, and publications on prostatic stenting, live surgical education, and complementary medicine in urological cancer.
